Learning Goal: Learning to recall and demonstrate addition facts up to 20 and related subtraction facts by counting and analyzing the number of recruits from each province and territory who enlisted with the Black Battalion.

Math - Graphs

Learning Goal: Students will organize, display, and analyze data using various graph types (concrete graphs, pictographs), while also understanding the historical significance of the No. 2 Construction Battalion. By working with datasets related to where Battalion members lived across Canada, students will learn to analyze the Battalion’s locations and demographics, drawing conclusions about migration patterns and community distribution.

Coding

This is a comprehensive cross-curricular unit for Grades 1-3 using Serena Virk’s We Remember The Black Battalion picture book. Students will have the opportunity to practise their coding skills, and develop their reading comprehension and oral language skills while learning about the importance of the No. 2 Black Construction Battalion during WWI.
